Virtual reality in games increases enjoyment but also creates gaming addiction

How do VR games compare to their more traditional counterparts? And what effect does this have on gamers?

Recent research has shown that virtual reality technology can have a significant impact on online gaming behaviour. A study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour, and Social Networking by authors Dr. Mark D. Griffiths and Dr. Angelica B. Ortiz de Gortari, investigated the effects of virtual reality on the psychological processes of online gamers.

The study found that virtual reality technology enhances the immersive experience of online gaming, leading to increased engagement and enjoyment. This, in turn, can lead to longer gaming sessions and a greater likelihood of problem gaming behaviour.

The immersive experience of virtual reality

Virtual reality technology immerses players in a digital world, providing a more realistic and engaging experience than traditional 2D online gaming. This can make the experience more enjoyable, leading to increased engagement and longer gaming sessions.

Increased engagement and enjoyment

The study found that players who used virtual reality technology reported higher levels of enjoyment and engagement in their gaming experience. This could be due to the enhanced immersion provided by virtual reality, which allows players to feel as though they are truly a part of the game world.

Risk of problem gaming behaviour

However, the study also found that the increased engagement and enjoyment associated with virtual reality technology can lead to longer gaming sessions and a greater likelihood of problem gaming behaviour. This is of particular concern given the potential for virtual reality technology to make online gaming more addictive.

Preventing problem gaming behaviour

It’s important to note that virtual reality technology is still in its infancy, and more research is needed to fully understand its effects on online gaming behaviour. But, in light of these findings, it’s crucial for game developers to implement responsible gaming measures and for players to be aware of the risks associated with virtual reality technology and to set limits for themselves.

It’s worth mentioning that there is a list of new casinos that are not on Gamstop, which allow self-excluded individuals to gamble again. These online games and casinos usually have strict responsible gambling policies in place and provide tools and resources to help their players gamble responsibly.

In conclusion, recent research has shown that virtual reality technology can have a significant impact on online gaming behaviour. The enhanced immersive experience provided by virtual reality can lead to increased engagement and enjoyment, but also a greater likelihood of problem gaming behaviour.

Game developers should implement responsible gaming measures and players should be aware of the risks associated with virtual reality technology and set limits for themselves.
